Oh, Succus Temero!

The source of Laurence’s wretched demise originated deep within the Old Tombs. The Old Blood brought upon a diabolical blood-borne pestilence. Master Willem knew well and cautioned all to heed his warning…to fear the Old Blood!

Caryll Runes are languages of the Great Ones inscribed by Runesmith Caryll, a student of Byrgenwerth. They presented unsettling mysteries and hidden truth about the Great Ones and the Old Blood.

Caryll, The Runesmith was a member of the Workshop that was able to hear the voice of Oedon, a Great One and managed to inscribe his words into runes.

Beast | Bloodborne Wiki

The “Beast” Rune is one of the early Caryll Runes as well as one of the first to be deemed forbidden.

The discovery of blood entailed the discovery of undesirable beasts and infernal abominations.

Clawmark | Bloodborne Wiki

The “Clawmark” is an impulse to seek the warmth of blood like a beast.

Runesmith Caryll describes the “Beast” as a horrific and unwelcomed instinct deep within the hearts of men, while “Clawmark” is an alluring invitation to accept this very nature.

Beast's Embrace | Bloodborne Wiki

After the repeated experiments in controlling the scourge of beasts, the gentle “Embrace” rune was discovered.

When its implementation failed, the “Embrace” became a forbidden rune, but this knowledge became a foundation of the Healing Church.

Those who swear this oath take on a ghastly form and enjoy accentuated transformation effects, especially while wielding a beast weapon.

Blood Rapture | Bloodborne Wiki

“Blood Rapture” is the raw euphoria of the warmth of blood.

This rune resonates with the servants of the Queen (Yharnam), carrier of the Child of Blood, who yearns for their Queen’s blood with little hope of requitement.

For them, they find solace in “Blood Rapture”, that serves as a surrogate for their desires.

The chosen Monarch

Queen Yharnam was chosen to commune with the Great Ones, through the gift of blood. A blood contract was the gift of the blood of the Great Ones, given to the monarch. The gift of the Great Ones blood is what enabled the Queen to be impregnated by the Great Ones. She is to be the mother to the Child of Blood, Mergo.

Bloodborne OST – Of the Pthumerian Line – Composer: Michael Wandmacher

With the blood of the Great Ones coursing through the veins of Queen Yharnam, her blood began to possess sublime healing qualities…

The servants of Queen Yharnam, the Pthumerians quickly discovered the healing qualities of her blood.

They deeply yearned for her blood. Desired to share it, in an attempt for the entirety of the Pthumerian civilization to commune with the Great Ones.

The servants of the Queen experienced the Blood Rapture, a raw euphoria of the warmth of blood.

Eventually, the servants of the Queen craved for her blood, more and more.

Ultimately this lust for blood led to the servants succumbing to the bloodlust, becoming insanely drunk with the blood.

The essence of the beast scourge, an impulse to seek the warmth of blood like a beast was starting to tear away the will of the servants.

In the end, the urge of the Queen’s blood became too much to bear, and so the servants, in their blood-drunk madness, took by force the one thing they truly desired, the blood of the Queen, and in the process, killed Mergo, the Child of Blood.

The red stains on her dress resulted from Mergo, her baby, who was brutally taken from her, ripped from her stomach before being born. This, along with the fact that she’s handcuffed indicates all of this happened against her will.

Bloodborne Soundtrack OST – Lullaby For Mergo – Composer: Ryan Amon

After the Hunter slays Rom, the Vacuous Spider, a Veil is lifted and the Hunter sets eyes on Queen Yharnam for the first time at Moonside Lake.

Her very obviously pregnant belly sliced open and no child left.

She is dead but her spirit lingers on tied to Mergo her infant Great One.

The death of Mergo gravely angered the Great Ones and they set upon the Pthumerians the blood curse, The Scourge of the Beast.

Anyone who becomes drunk with blood, succumbing to the beastly instinct that led to the death of Mergo, will transform into horrid beasts.

Something wicked this way comes…

The Pthumerian culture and the Queen eventually fell and when they died out they kept the secrets of communicating and the secrets bestowed upon them by the Great Ones were lost with them until the Church discovered Ebrietas, Daughter of the Cosmos.

And so begins the onslaught of the malefic plague, the Beast Scourge…

The Great Ones

The Great Ones are extremely powerful, phantasmagorical multi-dimensional beings that can exist across several planes of existence. They are Eldritch beings that reside on a higher plane than humanity.

Failed Great Ones – The One Reborn

Orphan of Kos

They are demonic and godly in both appearance and abilities. Beings powerful and are seen and worshiped as gods by Yharnamites.

The Doll with the Eldritch Being

The Great Ones caused the Scourge of the Beast, created horrific deformities and other monstrous transformations tracing back to the contaminated blood found within the lost and ancient labyrinth of Pthumeru.

They appear to be ageless, but they can be killed. Their powers can alter from divine to satanic, involving teleportation or strange phenomena, altered states, transcendental planes of thought or surreal realms, bring to form unknown and hideous creatures, entwining a bizarre reality that the human world cannot reach or comprehend. They caused Yharnam and other realms to be demented, haunted, vile and cursed.

Moon Presence

One of the strongest Great Ones appears to be the Moon Presence, the creator of the Nightmare dimension that the Hunter is trapped within.

The Tomb of the Gods

Beneath Yharnam lies an intricate old labyrinth of myriad, endless ruins, the Chalice Dungeons, the Tomb of the Gods carved by an ancient civilization known as the Pthumerians.

It was in this Labyrinth that the scholars made the discovery that caused Yharnam’s direful ruin. Deep inside the ancient Pthumerian Crypts the Scholars discovered a source of the Old Blood, the tainted Blood of the Great Ones.

Pthumerians possess great and powerful strength. Their strange, almost undead-like appearance is due to from being marked by the Eldritch Truth when they came in contact with the Great Ones. This knowledge of the Great Ones lies somewhere deep within the old labyrinth and many have perished in their attempt to acquire it…

Pthumerian Bell Maiden

Pthumerians were said to have unlocked the wisdom of the Eldritch Truth. The Old labyrinth is known to be a place in which an inquiry into the cosmos started. The Great Ones were here, in the labyrinth, long ago. Pthumerians served as guardians of the Great Ones.

Queen Yharnam by ceriselightning on DeviantArt

Pthumeria was ruled by Queen Yharnam. The ancient race who truly understood the Truth of the Great Ones and gained supernatural powers as a result.

Queen Yharnam, residing at the deepest dungeon of Pthumeru Ihyll.

Queen Yharnam was also the Holy Medium for the Great Ones. After a terrible tragedy the Pthumerians retreated into the deep labyrinth, with their holy chalices being the only remnants of their ancient rituals to break the seals in order to enter the crypts.

The Labyrinth

Highly revered by the scholars of Byrgenwerth, an academy that was built to understand the strange discoveries inside the labyrinth, especially the Truth of The Old Ones but the Truth is a terrible thing, slowly breaking the mind of anyone who delves too deeply.

Greater Viper Pit creature in the Forbidden Woods

Horrible things happened at Byrgenwerth and the neighbouring lands near and surrounding it such as the Forbidden Woods and Forbidden Graves, became defiled, infested with monstrosities and was eventually declared forbidden ground.

Bleak view of the Byrgenwerth College

Byrgenwerth is the name of both the building and the institution that began the scientific and arcane study of human transcendence and mysterious secrets of the Chalice Labyrinths, the occult knowledge of the Cosmos and the Great Ones that inhabit it. The founding members were the scholars, Provost Willem and his devout pupil Laurence.

The Corrupted Forbidden Woods & Forbidden Graveyard near Byrgenwerth

Everything begins at Byrgenwerth where the Great Ones were studied. The scholars of Byrgenwerth sent tomb prospectors to unearth the secrets buried beneath. As they descend deeper into the bowels of the labyrinth eventually, many went mad, and few returned.

Their study led to deepen their desire for humanity to ascend to their status as essential deities….and it came with a deadly cost.

The Healing Church

Laurence: “Master Willem, I’ve come to bid you farewell.”

Master Willem: “Oh, I know, I know. You think now, to betray me.”

Laurence:“No, but you will never listen. I tell you, I will not forget our adage.”

Master Willem: “…We are born of the blood, made men by the blood, undone by the blood. Our eyes are yet to open…”

Master Willem & Laurence: “Fear the old blood.”

Laurence: “I must take my leave.”

Master Willem: “By the gods, fear it, Laurence.”

The Betrayal of Laurence and the doomed fate of Yharnam

Master Willem: “By the gods, fear it, Laurence.”

Through the discovery of The Great Ones also led to the founding of the Healing Church, and the establishment of blood healing, a special concoction of Old Blood within the ancient labyrinths that could be used in a healing process known as Blood Ministration

The Healing Church was founded by Laurence. His departure from the academy was to pursue the ultimate goal; to summon or harness the power of the Great Ones.

Master Willem

Master Willem’s most important teaching is the adage “Fear the Old Blood”. He encourages all the scholars of his college to seek enlightenment and ascension through other methods except using the Old Blood.

The Clinic where blood ministration was initiated

The discovery of the old blood inspired Laurence, who believed that the healing properties of the old blood were of divine nature, and was the ideal medium to transcend humanity through transfusing it into human bodies.

Willem’s aim however, was to advance the evolution of humankind and achieve higher planes of thought through insight, searching inwardly in order to see what the Great Ones see to further evolve into greater beings and acquire more Eldritch knowledge.

Fear the Old Blood

Their paths ultimately diverged. Laurence with other like minded scholars of the Church then distributed the blood across the city. Despite this, Provost Willem held distrust towards the substance, believing the material to be far too dangerous.

After the Blood Ministration, the patient’s health is significantly increased. Quickly, the Healing Church in Yharnam became renowned across the continent, attracting the sick and afflicted who were seeking refuge from their ailments including the existing incurable poison illness known as the Ashen Blood.

Beast Patients of the incurable Ashen Blood Pandemic

The Cure then turned into an addiction because none could resist the tantalizing euphoria educed by this mysterious blood concoction. Engulfed in bizarre hallucinations and the virulent descent into madness.

A Fatal Omen

As blood healing became more common among the citizens of Yharnam, the results proved that when the Old Blood is mixed with human blood, it transforms subjects into beast.

This is when Yharnam’s plague of beast started. The Scourge devoured them from within, as the feral nature in them upsurged so did the relentless hunger for human flesh and blood grew.

The Healing Thirst by Aleš Kot, Piotr Kowalski, & Brad Simpson

The Church knew about the blood ministration’s heinous beastly side effects but they blame the outsiders for the source of the scourge. Travellers who are unlucky enough to get caught in the night of the hunt will be killed.

Laurence deeply regretted his decision of using the Old Blood and was among those who fell victim to the plague when infected blood began circulating and transformed into the first Cleric Beast in history, and was put to death.

Our thirst for blood satiates us, soothes our fears. Seek the old blood, but beware the frailty of men.

Prayer of the Healing Church
Laurence the First Vicar

What befell upon Laurence worse than death is that he was imprisoned in the Hunter’s Nightmare by The Great Ones. Left to burn for all eternity without memory, destined to seek the representation of his former life and mission in vain…

Left to burn for all eternity…

But all is not lost.

There are valuable Lore notes scattered throughout the land to aid the hunter and some were penned by Master Laurence. Through his findings he desperately reminded, in order to end the source of the nightmare and accursed plague, one must eliminate the Great Ones…slay them all.

And in doing so, to free him and the many damned souls from their wretched imprisonment…

“Master Willem was right. Evolution without courage will be the ruin of our race.”

“Hunt the Great Ones, Hunt the Great Ones.”

The terror and disheartening ruin borne out of the hopeful endeavour to empower, restore and elevate mankind through forbidden knowledge reflects the grievous Promethean tragedy.

A critical element and central theme portrayed in most of Lovecraft’s work, and clearly a strong influence and essence behind Bloodborne.

The Plain Doll

Welcome home, good Hunter. What is it you desire?

The Doll

The Doll is located in the Hunter’s Dream as an inanimate porcelain doll. A lifeless contraption but will later come to live and appears to be inhabited by some kind of Eldritch being. She is a key character and will play an important role to the Hunter in the treacherous quest that lies ahead.

She appears to breathe and sleep. She describes herself as “created by humans”, this could mean that the body she is inhabiting is man-made (the most apparent being her hands) but many of her actions suggest that she is a being that posses great power.

She cannot be killed, and when interacted she has the ability to use blood echoes to strengthen Hunters. In time she will also reveal to the hunter that “she is there to embolden the sickly spirit that ails the Hunter”

This sickly spirit she refers to is the beastly curse, and she is there to help guide the Hunter to conquer this sickness. According to the Clawmark Rune and Beast Roar, the beastly nature resides inside the hearts of all humans. This means that the Doll is trying to guide the Hunter to transcend humanity and evolve into a greater being to conquer the beast inside.

The Doll would be able to sense a soothing presence of the Hunter once the blood of the slain enemies has been absorbed. This is also known as Blood Echoes which is the will of the enemies. The Doll mentions that she senses the “Ancient Echoes coursing in the Hunter’s veins”. This means that she senses the will of the ancients in the hunter; the will of the Great Ones inside which suggests that the hunter is becoming more than human and less beast like.

The Doll is very loyal to the Hunter. She accepts her role to serve, believing it to be her purpose.

It seems that whoever created the doll sought after companionship, to ease the creator’s loneliness. She is the only NPC (Non Player Character) in all of Bloodborne that takes a kind, loving stance towards Hunters.

The Doll is soft-spoken and polite. She holds the Hunter in high regards and treats the Hunter with deep respect. Having been made by humans, she loves the Hunter, but is unsure whether her affection is real or artificial; a thought she ponders incessantly…

Yharnam Huntsmen

Huntsmen – Bloodborne Wiki Guide – IGN

Huntsmen are natives to Yharnam. They are sickly, violent and can be seen as malformed due to the infection. They are slowly transforming into hideous beasts caused by the plague.

When night falls, they form hunting parties in order to hunt beasts and outsiders alike. They attack human outsiders because the plague has made them delirious, blaming them for the plague, and are unable to tell the difference between man and beast.

Huntsmen use a variety of weapons such as pitchforks, blades, axes, firearms, torches, and shields. Huntsmen have a high intelligence and communicate with one another, crying out for help when attacked by the Hunter and alerting nearby enemies.

They will also attempt to ambush the Hunter by playing dead or lurking in the shadows. They can be seen alone or in large groups with hounds. They can be absolutely deadly when they attack in a group.

The Hunters and The Hunt

The hunters are a group of warriors who are dedicated to keeping their regions safe by hunting down beasts or anything other than beasts if need be that pose a threat.

Hunters are agile fighters armed with a trick weapon, a transforming melee weapon in the right hand, and a firearm in the left. They do not employ shields, but rather take advantage of their mobility in order to avoid attacks.

The Scourge of The Beast

The most common form of the blood sickness appears to be lycanthropy: Humans slowly turning into wolves. Those in the early stages of the sickness have lengthened canine teeth and grow more hair. As they progress, their arms and legs lengthen and the spine hunches over and the face begins to elongate. Eventually, they grow fur and their body finishes the change into a Scourge Beast.

Along with the physical transformation comes a mental degradation: At first the victim assumes all people they don’t know are hostile and they’ll attack on sight. As the alterations progress, the victim becomes more and more savage and hostile.

The blood sickness seems to be endemic to Yharnam, requiring periodic hunts for those very far gone. The hunters are both respected and feared: They bring down the worst of the beasts, but are at risk of contamination themselves.

The Hunter’s Nightmare

A fate worse than the Scourge of The Beast is to be imprisoned in a hellish world drenched in blood and insane monstrosities, lit by a possessed moon. A place called The Hunter’s Nightmare. The moonlight shows familiar buildings half swallowed by sludge, leaning over, distorted.

It is here that hunters of old, riddled by horrible nightmares, endlessly pursue beasts in a blood drunk frenzy. An insatiable and voracious appetite that can never be fulfilled.

The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown.
